An American delegation is headed to the Vote 16 Global Research Meeting in Edinburgh! During their trip they will attend a meeting at University of Edinburgh of researchers from around Europe studying Vote 16 policy. Anyone in this network is welcome to join virtually as well!
Here is the meeting overview and link to join from the meeting convener Dr. Jan Eichhorn:
Votes at 16: Advancing collaboration internationally
Monday, 19 June 2023 will be an exciting day for Votes at 16, because we’ll have a day filled with conversations on advancing collaboration internationally both amongst academic researchers and activists. In Edinburgh, Jan Eichhorn will be hosting a meeting at the University of Edinburgh’s School of Social and Political Science in which people who have been developing new strands of collaborative work will discuss how to bring those areas of work together to multiple opportunities for engagement across countries. This will involve discussions about a possible series of workshops, a special issue with new research on the topic, collaborations amongst activists and plans for funding applications.
Everyone interested in this anywhere in the world can then take part in a hybrid session (5-6pm UK time | 19 June) in which we’ll discuss key plans and opportunities to become involved more for further cooperations. So if you haven’t signed up to it yet, you’ll be able to join using this link: VOTES AT 16 – INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION (Monday, 19 June, 5pm UK time). If you’d like to receive a calendar invite but haven’t yet, please send a quick email to Jan.Eichhorn@ed.ac.uk to ask for one
We are so thrilled to have an American delegation representing us at the meeting! Our delegation is led by Jahnavi Rao. Jahnavi is the founder of New Voters, a national movement of leaders in high schools across the United States working to make sure every high school student gets registered and ready to vote. A recent graduate of Harvard College, she is joining the University of Maryland Center for Democracy and Civic Engagement this fall as a Senior Fellow where she will develop research partnerships to explore the question of what it will take to bring high quality voter education programs to every American high school.
Jahnavi is joined in the delegation by two of the most inspiring youth leaders in the Vote 16 USA movement.
Julia Rottenberg is a rising senior at Culver City High School and serves as communications manager for the indefatigable Vote 16 Culver City campaign whose ballot measure came within a just few votes of lowering the voting age last fall in Culver City California and earned the support of major partners including the Los Angeles Democratic Party.
Krisha Ramani from the Vote 16 Michigan Coalition will also be joining the delegation. Krisha and her team are in the process of introducing legislation on both the voting age and civics education curriculum in the Michigan legislature.
Jahnavi, Julia, and Krisha will be presenting at the meeting on their work advancing Vote 16 and youth political power in the United States! We know they will make us proud!
They also will be sharing reflections and learnings from this trip at our Vote 16 Research Network Summer Meeting on 6/29 at 3:30 pm EST. We will be sharing more about the AMAZING agenda in store for that meeting next week.
